FAQ

  • Where do you source all your flowers?

Most of my flowers are grown in my backyard garden. Many are grown from Canadian-sourced seeds and I support a variety of local greenhouses when purchasing bedding plants. Generous family and friends let me snip from their gardens too! A small number of my botanicals are foraged. And… I’ll occasionally buy from local floral shops during the winter for flowers that I do (or cannot) grow.

  • What are your foraging practices?

I am always mindful of collecting wild botanicals with sustainability in mind. When possible, I forage on private land with permission (thanks sis!) and refrain from picking in protected spaces like provincial or national parks. I never pick protected or at-risk species, the first or the last blooms, and only forage from patches where flowers are plentiful (1 in 20 is the general rule).

  • How can I care for my pressed flower art?

For the best chance at longevity, always display your art in a location that is out of direct (or even indirect) sunlight or artificial light like lamps. Avoid spaces with high humidity such as bathrooms. The flowers have been carefully dried so adding moisture back in will compromise them. Keep your pressed flower pieces away from vents or blowing air.

  • How should I clean the glass?

The glass acts as a protective layer for the flowers. If needed, a small brush can be used to remove any small bits that settle during transport, or over time. The glass can be wiped with a moistened cloth but avoid spraying cleaner directly on the frame. If you wash the glass inside, let it thoroughly dry before reframing.

  • Will my flowers change colour over time?

Pressed flowers are organic by nature and that’s what makes this medium so special. But as with all things in nature, it means that they are expected to change and become more muted over time - living colour you could say! Not every flower presses equally, but I have worked hard to find those that hold their colour the longest and age gracefully with time.

  • Do you colour correct any of your flowers?

Over the past year, I have been experimenting with a method of colour-matching petals and stems using a fine pigmented powder. My goal is to use this method in a subtle way so that the colour of the flower is matched, but not changed. This will allow the colours to stay true - and stay longer, without looking artificial.

  • Will you press my special flowers?

Flowers allow us hold on to time, to place, to people. They hold the energy of the most powerful moments in our lives. In the “Pressed Memories” option, I will traditionally press your special flowers - memorial flowers or even your beloved garden blooms. Unfortunately, I am not accepting wedding bouquets at this time.
